February 13-February 16 Community Connection Blog

 February 13th-February 16th

Reminder: No School on Monday, 2/12/24

Tuesday, 2/13

Clean bathroom challenge begins!

Next week we start a weekly challenge to keep our school bathrooms incident free. Unfortunately, students have been purposefully clogging toilets, defacing walls and causing other damage to our bathrooms. Starting Tuesday, February 13, for every 4 consecutive days that our bathrooms stay clean, students earn a school wide reward on the 5th day. The first reward is a lunchtime dance party!

Help us reach our goals by talking to your children and encouraging them to follow our Bathroom PBIS Rules:

*Safe: keep water and soap off the floors; report problems

*Responsible: one person per stall; use the bathroom quickly and as intended; go straight back to class

*Respectful: flush toilet; keep trash out of toilets and off floors

We got this! We know we can Keep it Clean!

Wednesday, 2/14

Happy Valentine’s Day - We are celebrating kindness and friendship this upcoming Valentine's Day with a spirit day at school! We want to encourage your children to wear red on Wednesday, February 14th in celebration of Valentine's Day!

It was so much fun to read to classes on Friday.  We really enjoyed talking about taking responsibility for our choices while we read together.  Thank you to all of the teachers who invited me to their classrooms to read last week.

A Touch of Understanding - 4th Grade

IB Attribute

Our learner profile attribute for the month of February is KNOWLEDGEABLE.

Students who are knowledgeable have explored relevant and significant concepts and can remember what they have learned. They can draw on this knowledge and apply it in new situations.

How can parents help to develop students who are knowledgeable at home?

  • Encourage your child to read books at home that correspond with the topics being covered in school.

  • Ask your child about what they are learning in school and engage them in conversations about it, for example:

    • "Why do you think that is an important thing to know about?"

    • "Can you think of anything happening in the world today that might be similar to that aspect of History?"

    • "You're learning about pulleys and gears at school? This reminds me of your simple machines unit in second grade...           have you noticed any similarities? How is what you're learning different?"

  • Foster any area that your child expresses an interest in with books and activities, but also be sure to encourage them to explore other areas.

  • Encourage your child to become familiar with current events and to read the newspaper and watch the news when appropriate.

Student Council Spreading Kindness:

Valentine's Day is around the corner, and we want to spread kindness and friendship here at school! The Student Council will be selling Valentine's Day candy grams Monday through Friday next week (2/5-2/9). A candy gram is a small card that your child can purchase for a friend. They can write a kind note to their friend, we will attach a jolly rancher to the candy gram, and they will all be delivered to students on Valentine's Day!

This is completely optional, but if your child would like to participate in the fun, candy grams will be on sale for $0.25 during lunch time at the blue picnic tables on the playground. There will also be a stack of candy grams available for purchase in the office if a parent would like to send one to a child :)

We have told students that they may only purchase up to four candy grams at a time. We can make change, but hopefully students are not bringing much more than $1.00 to school! Please reach out to Student Council Advisors Kristin Kvinnesland or Katie Palin with any questions!

With Kindness,
