If you choose disagree, please take time to write a comment to further explain. Please include ideas for improvement if applicable.

All responses are anonymous and your personal information is never released.  We truly appreciate your time in helping us make Sargeant the best place it can be.

Spanish Update

Dear families of 3rd to 5th graders, be on the lookout this week for the new resources coming home from our latest stories.

Warm regards,
Maestra Neira.

The Book Corner

This week Mrs. O'Connors and Mrs. Vandivier are talking about chapter books.  Early Chapter books, or junior chapter books, are a great transition from picture books.  They still have some pictures and the sentences are wider apart.  They also tend to be shorter, maybe 130 pages or less.  These are a great way to build confidence and there are some great books out there.

Mrs O'Connors suggests:
Fancy Nancy - Fancy Nancy ranges from picture books to early chapter books.  What's great about these is that the main character is the same in all the books which helps a new reader feel familiar with something they are reading.  Fancy Nancy is a fun and fancy girl, always looking for adventure with family and friends.

Mrs. Vandivier suggests:
Desmond Cole: Ghost Patrol - a fearless eight-year-old who runs his own ghost patrol, looking for ghosts, monsters, and mischief-makers everywhere! His unlikely partner in crime, Andres Miedoso, is scared of everything, but the best friends know sticking together is the best way to face down the creepy things in their town.  Mrs. Vandivier's son gives this series 2 big thumbs up!

You can find Fancy Nancy in the school library and Mrs. Vandivier loves to share books from her classroom so stop by if you are interested in Desmond Cole.  All books can be checked out at the library or purchased through Amazon or your local bookshop!

March 2-6 is Read Across America Week
Dr. Seuss is celebrated nationwide on his birthday, March 2, as Read Across America Day.

The Book Corner

This week Mrs. O'Connors and Mrs. Vandivier are sharing picture books that help kids with their big feelings.  These stories are great read alouds and promote great conversations as needed.

Mrs. O'Connors suggests:
Be Kind What does it mean to be kind? From asking the new girl to play to standing up for someone being bullied, this moving and thoughtful story explores what a child can do to be kind.

Out of a Jar - Llewellyn does not like to feel afraid or sad, angry, lonely, or embarrassed. And so he comes up with a brilliant plan: he tucks each of his feelings into jars and hides them away where they won't bother him anymore.

Mrs. Vandivier suggests:
Be You - Be You! is an encouraging picture book that dares every one of us to be ourselves — to concentrate on learning and growing, being adventurous, kind, persistent, brave, and patient

Clovis Keeps His Cool - Clovis used to struggle with his temper, but ever since he took over his late grandmother's china shop, he's been learning how to manage it

You can find Mrs. O'Connors' suggestions in the school library but all books can be found at the local library, on Amazon, or at your local bookstore.  And remember, picture books are a great way to discuss many topics in a lighthearted, and sometimes funny, way!

State Testing Schedule Update - Please do your best to avoid scheduling appointments or other events on these dates.  Positive attendance supports the best testing experience for all students.

Girls on the Run

We are so excited to offer Girls On the Run this year!  This is a wonderful opportunity for girls in grades 3-5 to have fun, make friends, increase their physical activity levels and learn important life skills.  The program runs for 10 weeks and will start in March.  During this time they will work with and learn from our Sargeant coaches while training for a 5K. Practices will be after school on Mondays and Thursdays. Registration is now open! Please reach out to Cathy Gibson or Jennifer Danielson with questions about the program or registration.  You can also find out more information about the program by visiting GOTRsac.org.

The Book Corner:
This month is black history month and we are honoring the works of diverse authors who are sharing joyful stories.

Mrs. O'Connors is recommending several picture books (found in our library) that make an impact and show that anything is possible when we all work together:

Change Sings by Amanda Gorman
The 1619 Project by Nikole Hannah-Jones and Renee Watson
Little Cloud and Lady Wind by Toni Morrison

Mrs. Vandivier highly recommends the chapter book Ways to Make Sunshine by Renee Watson.  It's the first in a series about Ryan Hart, a young girl who loves to spend time with her friends, loves to invent recipes, and has a lot on her mind—school, self-image, and family.  No matter what, she is always finding a way to put a positive spin on things!

This series is on Mrs. O'Connors wish list for the library but Mrs. Vandivier has 6 copies to lend to anyone who is interested in reading this book.  Just visit her room anytime this week!

On Friday, 2/10 the Sargeant students and staff did a fantastic job when the administration initiated a Hold through our Raptor emergency system.  We were able to quickly clear the issue to allow for students and staff to return to their regularly scheduled activities.

A Hold means that we need students to stay in place and not transition to their next location in order for an area to be clear while assistance is occurring for a student or staff.  The students and staff are alerted through Raptor and over the intercom to hold in their area.  Everyone stays in place, even if the bell rings.

Great work being safe and following directions, Bulldogs!

Congratulations for Advancement to the Placer County Spelling Bee - Muibi Hassan-Olajoku!

Meal Duty Supervisor: We are still in search of a Meal Duty Supervisor from 11:20-12:20 Monday-Friday.  If you are interested in this position, please apply on edjoin.org for the RCSD Meal Duty Supervisor position and note your interest in working at Sargeant.  Please, also contact the office to let us know that you have applied.

Sargeant Reminders for Students:
Please leave toys, devices and games at home.  We are finding that these items are coming to school with students and have become a distraction.
Toys, stuffed animals, electronic games and devices, radios, MP3s, trading cards, etc. are disruptive to the learning environment and are not allowed at school or on the bus. (Sargeant Parent and Student Handbook p.23)

The Book Corner

Here are the latest recommendations for 4th and 5th graders made by Mrs. O'connors and Mrs. Vandivier.  This week it's all about historical fiction:

If your child loved the "I Survived" Series, they might like:

Code Talkers - a story about a young boy who lies about his age in order to become a Navajo code talker in the war.

Ground Zero - a story about a young 9 year old boy who goes to work with his dad on 9/11...highly recommended by Mrs. O'Connors

Number the Stars - a story about a 10 year old girl living during the Nazi invasion.

Pax and Pax: The Journey Home - a story about a boy and his fox who become separated when the boy's father goes to war...these 2 books are among Mrs. V. 's Top 5 favorite reads.

All choices are in the school library but can also be found in your local library, bookstore, or on Amazon.

Sargeant Support Center

As some of you may be aware, Ms. Hillary will be on maternity leave as of next week with her last day at Sargeant being February 8th. Ms. Hillary has prepared her students for her departure and is in the process of pushing into classrooms to say goodbye for the year. She will not be back for the remainder of this school year, however, our Support Center will still be a space available for students, depending on staff coverage. Furthermore, if you or your family is in need of any assistance, such as referrals to community resources or mental health support, please complete the attached Wellness Referral so the Wellness Team can support you. However, if you or someone you know is experiencing an immediate mental health crisis (such as danger to self or others), please contact other resources for support such as 911, 988 (mental health crisis lifeline), your local hospital, or the Placer County Mobile Crisis Triage number: 916)787-8860.

Good news- Sargeant will be welcoming a graduate level intern into the Sargeant Support Center in April of this year! She will be at Sargeant approximately one day per week this year and will also be continuing to support through the 2023-2024 school year. She will be a member to our Wellness Team and will be providing a variety of supports, such as social skills groups for students, Wellness Club, individual student check-ins, and resource support for students and families. We look forward to her joining our team!

We appreciate your understanding and flexibility with these transitions!
