Sargeant Families Blog - December 28th

Hope everyone is having a restful break and finding time to spend with family and friends.

Music Update
As some of you have heard, the band director at Eich Middle School resigned suddenly due to health concerns.  Mrs. Aldridge, our music teacher, was called on to consider taking over the program.  She has spent the majority of her career teaching middle school band and this was something she couldn't pass up.  She will be greatly missed at Sargeant, but we know she will do great things at Eich, and our students will one day get to be a part of the program in middle school.  With Mrs. Aldridge's and the district's guidance, we were able to find a replacement to start in January.  The two will be working together to make sure the transition is a smooth one. We will work on a plan for Mrs. Aldridge to come say goodbye to the students.

Note from Mrs. Rainey
There are no words to express the depth of gratitude that I have for the outpouring of support you have shown Néstor Boscán's family during the most difficult time of their lives. They are extremely appreciative. You have amazed the family with your GoFundMe donations, with meals, with hugs and with your loving words. Not a single gesture has gone unnoticed. This school, and this community, are an example of what it means to be connected and to be kind to every person every day. Néstor's family will never forget you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
-Mrs. Rainey

Toy Drive
Thank you, Sargeant families, for your incredible donations to the CHiP Toy Drive. Your donations are given to children displaced from their homes this holiday season, and the CHP officers were overwhelmed by your generosity, when they picked up the toys on Monday morning. Thank you for living out loud our school motto: Be Connected, Be Kind!
\

Continue enjoying your winter break.  Take time to snuggle up and read a book with your child.  At some point next week Mrs. Peck will be reading a book to the students and posting it on Facebook for all to enjoy.  If you are not following us on Facebook please start! Check out RCSD Sargeant on Facebook and Twitter @rcsdsargeant.

Sargeant Families Blog - December 1st

IB Corner
December's Attribute: Balanced
Students who are BALANCED are healthy and are aware that eating properly and exercising is important in their lives.  They understand that is important to have a balance between the physical and mental  aspects of their bodies.

How can families help at home?

  • Role model this attribute by:
    • Playing outside
    • Going to the park
    • Making  dinner together
    • Reading a book
    • Playing  a board game
    • Going on a walk
    • Doing chores as a family

Kind Kids Club
Today we kicked off the Kind Kids Club with kindergarten.  We brainstormed ways to be kind at school and at home.  Ask your child about it this weekend.
Students showing kindness in kinder get to wear one of our Kindness Capes

Yearbook Pictures
Soon it will be time to start gathering pictures for this year's yearbook.  Please keep photos from classroom activities you attend in order to share them with the classroom teacher.

Safety and Driving
Please make sure you are following traffic laws as you drop off and pick up your child at school.  We understand that mornings can be hectic, so please allow for plenty of time to get your child to school on time.  We have had some reports of drivers illegally passing others to get to the drop off sooner and it puts our kids in danger.  Please be aware of drivers, walkers, and bike riders.  We want everyone to be safe.

PTC Update
Please check out the most recent newsletter from PTC with dates and information for December.

Member of our Community
Many of you know, one of our 4th grade students, Nestor Boscan, passed away unexpectedly on November 26. He leaves behind his parents and a 3 year old sister. Needless-to-say, his family is devastated. Nestor's family has only been in the United States for just over a year, and they have no family members in this country.  Your outpouring of kindness has been a blessing to them. They know that Nestor was well-liked by his peers and the staff, and this is of great comfort to them.

Below are the funeral arrangements for Nestor, which are being handled by Lambert Funeral Home on Douglas Blvd in Roseville. The family welcomes your love and support and are open to talking about Nestor.

Hopefully, as many people as possible can attend the Memorial Service on December 14. If you can attend, please let Mrs. Rainey know at srainey@rcsdk8.org. The church is providing the food, and we need to get a rough estimate of people. CHILDREN ARE WELCOME AT THE MEMORIAL SERVICE.

Public Visitation/Wake:
Wednesday, December 6th, 5:00-6:00pm
Open Casket
Lambert Funeral Home

Memorial Service:

*Food reception to follow at the church

People have asked about how they can help or support the family...
Provide a flower arrangement for the Memorial Service (as a group or as an individual). Mom would like JOYFUL flowers. Flowers can be sent to the church the MORNING of December 14.

Provide a meal for the family: https://mealtrain.com/r3memd

Thank you for embracing this family in their time of need! Please let Mrs. Peck know if you have any questions.

Sargeant Families Blog - November 21st

I am thankful for the support from our Sargeant Families.  We appreciate all that you do every day at home and at our school.  I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving spending time with family and friends.

IB Corner
Learner Profile Attribute for November is Courageous

Students who are COURAGEOUS try to solve problems in a lot of ways.  They are brave when they defend their beliefs to others.

How can families help at home?

  • If your child is feeling uneasy about trying something, encourage them to attempt it and then reflect on whether they liked the activity and how it felt to try something new.
  • Encourage your child to try something new: food, sport, book, or activity.

Two easy ways to support Sargeant without selling anything to friends, family and co-workers: Amazon Smile and Box Tops!  If you already use Amazon to shop, sign up with Amazon Smile.  Checkout the flyer for steps on how to set up and account that connects to our PTC.  Simple and easy!  Anyone can do it...share with friends and family.

Continue collecting Box Tops all year long!  If items you purchase have the Box Top label, cut it out and send it in.

GATE Testing
The 2018-2019 school year GATE identification test will be administered at the District Office for students currently in 2nd – 7th grade.  The students will take the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test, OLSAT, that tests abstract thinking and reasoning ability.  Students must attend one of the testing dates on the OLSAT Parent Permission Form in order to complete the testing by the district.  The Parent Permission Forms will be made available on November 13, 2017 on our district website @ www.rcsdk8.org under the “Parent” tab.  All forms must be returned to the District Office by January 5, 2018 if you would like your student tested. There are no exceptions as materials are ordered based on the number of returned forms.  Make sure you check the district website under the “Parents” tab for more information regarding GATE services and testing.

IB Attribute of the Month - Inquirer
How can the Inquirer attribute be developed at home?
- Provide opportunities for your child to be curious and ask questions.  This can include visiting a library, museum, exploring outside, or doing research on a computer.
- Encourage your child to be an inquirer by asking them "why: or "how" when you are talking or reading about different topics.

Sargeant Families Blog - October 27th

Thank you for all of your support for the Harvest Festival!  We appreciate the time and donations everyone put into it!  We had a fun night.  We are learning each year how to make some improvements and appreciate the feedback we received.  We will be making some changes next year on ticket sales at the gate.

Love of Reading
At Sargeant we believe that it is important to develop a love of reading in every child.  We encourage reading in the classroom and at home.  Reading is something we want kids to engage in on a daily basis.  Take time reading with your child and reading to your child.  If you are in need of some  books, check out the public library or let your child's teacher know and we can send some home.  We have free books available.

This week was our first lunch with the principal where we celebrate reading.  Kids are chosen for a variety of reasons: avid reader, love of reading, shares books with others, newly acquired love. etc.  We get to talk about books and enjoy lunch together.  Here's a little video from our lunch.  💙

Sami's Circuit Family Night
The students enjoyed Sami's Circuit this week and in the near future (November 8th!) we have him coming back for family night.  Please check out the flyers sent home in Wednesday's folders or the link above.  We would love to pack the multi!  Loved his messages on Wednesday:
"When negative things happen, keep your head up.  If we don't quit, we win!"
