Birthday Books
While we are on campus, kids get to come up to Mrs. Peck's office to pick out a book from our Birthday Book Cart on their birthday.  Since we are virtual, we still want to get them their birthday book. Starting today, Mrs. Peck will be dropping off books on the porches of students who celebrated their birthday during the week.  Hopefully it will be a nice surprise on your doorstep for your child. 💙📚

* Pick up will be in the multi.  If you can't come at your time, you can come any time between 2:00 and 5:00.  You can pick up multiple grade levels at the same time. 

Revised Schedule
As you saw in the communication from Derk Garcia*, we will be revising the schedule for distance learning.  We are changing recess to 10:00-10:20 and lunch from 12:00-1:00.  This will allow families that need to go get lunch enough time to get it, eat and be back for class.  Teacher instruction will end at 2:00 however there will still be independent work for the students to do until 3:15.  More information will be communicated next week and the schedule will start Tuesday the 8th after Labor Day.  
* The communication is being sent from Mr. Garcia today.  You may get this blog post before then.  

Technology Update for TK-2nd
This information was sent out on Wednesday, August 26th.  

Technology Services will begin updating student passwords for all lower-grades students.  This update is being released in an effort to align student passwords with a more secure, unique password, for the following lower-grades ONLY:

  • Preschool
  • Transitional Kindergarten
  • Kindergarten
  • First
  • Second

Beginning Wednesday, August 26th, your student will log in to all learning applications and their Google account using either their existing Clever badge or the following credentials:

Username:  StudentID@rcsdkids.us (example: 267555@rcsdkids.us)
Password:   MMDD, please use the Month and Date of your student’s date of birth
(example: 0824 if your student was born on August 24th).

Please note, students enrolled in Preschool through Second-grade will not be prompted to change their password upon initial login.

Nuestros estudiantes de TK están trabajando en las rutinas de estar en una nueva escuela y hacer nuevos amigos. Comenzarán su primera unidad de investigación a fines de septiembre.

Segundo grado
Quienes somos
Los estudiantes de segundo grado están aprendiendo cómo funcionan los sistemas gubernamentales en todo el mundo y por qué las sociedades dependen de ellos.

Dentro de la unidad, los estudiantes ...
- Centrarse en los procedimientos en un sistema de gobierno
- Aprenda que los sistemas gubernamentales no son los mismos en todas partes.
- Conocer el papel que juegan los ciudadanos en cada sistema.

Tercer grado
Compartiendo el Planeta
Los académicos de tercer grado se han sumergido en su primera unidad de investigación, Sharing the Planet. Están aprendiendo cómo las plantas y los animales se adaptan a los entornos cambiantes de todo el mundo.

- Aprenda cómo las plantas y los animales se adaptan al entorno en el que viven.

Cuarto grado

Nuestros estudiantes de cuarto grado están aprendiendo sobre las características de la Tierra, como los accidentes geográficos y las vías fluviales, así como los desastres naturales que son causados ​​por el cambio de la Tierra, y cómo afecta a los seres vivos, particularmente a los humanos.

Libros de cumpleaños

Actualización de tecnología para TK-2nd
Esta información se envió el miércoles 26 de agosto.
Los Servicios de Tecnología comenzarán a actualizar las contraseñas de los estudiantes para todos los estudiantes de grados inferiores. Esta actualización se lanza en un esfuerzo por alinear las contraseñas de los estudiantes con una contraseña única más segura, SOLAMENTE para los siguientes grados inferiores:

Sargeant Families Blog - August 24th-28th

Hello Sargeant Families, 

I have spent the week visiting classes virtually and have enjoyed seeing your children engaged with their teacher.  The kids are learning, interacting and building relationships.  

Now that we have finished up week two, things are running more smoothly and we have back up plans in place in case things go down (Zoom links in multiple places).  Please continue to make sure you and your child are in communication with your child's teacher.  With the current state of fires and power, we may have families that experience power outages.  Your teachers are working on plans and will let you and the children know what to do if they can't connect.  Just know, it will all be ok. 😀

Sargeant's Three Rules 
While we are distance learning, we are still following the three Sargeant school rules.  Over the last two weeks, teachers have taken time to review these rules and expectations for what it looks like and sounds like in their virtual classroom.  We wanted to share them with you as well so you see the school wide expectations.  

Virtual Calming Room

This is a place you can find activities for elementary and middle school students, as well as for adults that aid in positively managing stress. We hope you find it beneficial! Click here to access the Virtual Calming Room


Request for Support
If you would like to connect with one of the school-based mental health professionals in the district or need additional support during distance learning, they can fill out this non emergency form below.

Student Recognition 
Just like in the past, we will have monthly recognition assemblies where students are recognized by their teacher for the IB attribute of the month and for following the school rules.  Next Wednesday is our first virtual assembly.  Teachers will recognize their own students in a live meeting with their class and then they will watch the assembly video together.  

Annual Family Notice 
Every year the annual family notice for the district is posted for parent to review and then we ask that you sign a form stating you have reviewed it.  This form goes home in the first week packets.  Since we are not on campus right now, the document is posted below.  You can choose to print the last page, sign it and drop it off at the next materials pick up day (September 3rd) or we will have hard copies of the signature page at the materials pick up day where you can sign and leave with us.  

Paper Grocery Bags 
If you have extra paper grocery bags laying around the house, we could use these for the materials pick up day.  There will be a box out front all next week where you can drop them off.  Thank you in advance!


Otus and Zoom Back Up 
As part of our back up plan, if Otus is having difficulty connecting, all the teachers have placed their Zoom link on Clever.  This will allow kids to log into their live meeting without getting into Otus.  The picture below is an example of what a student's view may look like in Clever.  This is just one teacher's page but you can see that PE and Music are there as well. 


School Site Council 
We are looking to add a parent to our School Site Council Committee.  As a committee, we meet 4-5 times during the year.  This will all be virtually after school hours.  We review the school site plan, safety plan, and parent survey.  Please email Mrs. Peck if you are interested.  If we have more than one person interested we will send out a form for voting.  Thank you!

District English Learner Advisory Committee  (DELAC)

This year we will still be having our English Learner Advisory Committee meetings (ELAC) to discuss supports for your children.  We also will have our District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC). As we continue to plan ways to support all students, it's important to have your input.  The first DELAC meeting will be held virtually from 5:00-6:00 on September 8th.  Please email Mrs. Peck at rpeck@rcsdk8.org if you are interested in being the representative for our school.  This would require you to attend the district meeting and report back to our school ELAC meeting about information.  Please be on the lookout for information about out first ELAC meeting.

Hola familias de Sargeant,

Pasé la semana visitando clases virtualmente y disfruté viendo a sus hijos comprometidos con su maestro. Los niños están aprendiendo, interactuando y construyendo relaciones.

Ahora que hemos terminado la semana dos, las cosas están funcionando mejor y tenemos planes de respaldo en caso de que las cosas no funcionen (vínculos de Zoom en varios lugares). Las tres reglas del sargento
Mientras aprendemos a distancia, seguimos las tres reglas de la escuela Sargeant. Reconocimiento de estudiantes
Al igual que en el pasado, tendremos asambleas de reconocimiento mensuales donde los estudiantes son reconocidos por su maestro por el atributo IB del mes y por seguir las reglas del colegio. El próximo miércoles es nuestra primera asamblea virtual. Los maestros reconocerán a sus propios estudiantes en una reunión en vivo con su clase y luego verán el video de la asamblea juntos.

Aviso familiar anual
Cada año se publica el aviso familiar anual para el distrito para que los padres lo revisen y luego le pedimos que firme un formulario que indique que lo ha revisado. Este formulario se envía a casa en los paquetes de la primera semana. Dado que no estamos en el campus en este momento, el documento se publica a continuación. Puede optar por imprimir la última página, firmarla y entregarla el próximo día de recogida de materiales (3 de septiembre) o tendremos copias impresas de la página de la firma en el día de recogida de materiales donde puede firmar y dejar con nosotros. .

Bolsas de papel para comestibles
Si tiene bolsas de papel adicionales en la casa, podríamos usarlas para el día de recolección de materiales. Habrá una caja en el frente toda la próxima semana donde puede dejarlos. ¡Gracias de antemano!


Otus y Zoom Back Up
Como parte de nuestro plan de respaldo, si Otus tiene dificultades para conectarse, todos los maestros han colocado su enlace Zoom en Clever. Esto permitirá que los niños inicien sesión en su reunión en vivo sin ingresar a Otus. La siguiente imagen es un ejemplo de cómo puede verse la vista de un estudiante en Clever. Esta es solo la página de un maestro, pero puede ver que Educación Física y Música también están ahí.


Consejo del Plantel Escolar
Esperamos agregar un padre a nuestro Comité del Consejo del Plantel Escolar. Como comité, nos reunimos 4-5 veces durante el año. Todo esto será virtualmente después del horario escolar. También tendremos nuestro Comité Asesor de Estudiantes de Inglés del Distrito (DELAC). A medida que continuamos planificando formas de apoyar a todos los estudiantes, es importante contar con su opinión. Sargeant Families Blog - August 17th - 21st

August: Caring

Students who are CARING want people around them to be happy and treat others how they want to be treated. They think about the world and work to take care of their community and the environment.  


How can families help at home?

  • Role model the caring behavior you would like to see in your child all the time. Using kind words, helping people without being asked, and being an active listener all show your child that you care about people. 

  • Think about how your family can get involved with community organizations.

  • Discuss as a family what you can do to take care of the environment.  

  • After reading a book, spend some time considering how the people in the book acted. Was someone in the book caring?


IB Corner
This year we are still going to do assemblies virtually. Ms. DeArcos will be making a video that the teachers will play at a class Zoom meeting to honor the students being acknowledged for the month.  Since we are learning from home teachers aren't able to take pictures of the kids in their class.  So, parents, we need your help!! 

We need pictures of your kids learning at home to add to the slide show.  The pictures can be of them sitting on the computer learning from their teacher, a picture of them doing an art project when they are not on the computer, a picture of them in music/PE class, or anything you want to send to show how learning is going at home!! The deadline to send pictures for the first assembly is Friday August 21st.

Tech Support

Agosto: Caring

¿Cómo pueden ayudar las familias en casa?

Modele el comportamiento afectivo que le gustaría ver en su hijo todo el tiempo. Usar palabras amables, ayudar a las personas sin que se lo pidan y ser un oyente activo le demuestra a su hijo que usted se preocupa por la gente.

Piense en cómo su familia puede participar en organizaciones comunitarias.

Analicen en familia lo que pueden hacer para cuidar el medio ambiente.

Después de leer un libro, dedique un tiempo a considerar cómo actuaron las personas en el libro. ¿A alguien en el libro le importaba?


Esquina IB
Este año todavía vamos a hacer montajes de forma virtual. La Sra. DeArcos hará un video que los maestros reproducirán en una reunión de Zoom de la clase para honrar a los estudiantes que fueron reconocidos por el mes. Dado que estamos aprendiendo de los maestros orientadores, no podemos tomar fotografías de los niños en su clase. ¡Entonces, padres, necesitamos su ayuda!

Necesitamos fotos de sus hijos aprendiendo en casa para agregar a la presentación de diapositivas. Las imágenes pueden ser de ellos sentados en la computadora aprendiendo de su maestro, una imagen de ellos haciendo un proyecto de arte cuando no están en la computadora, una imagen de ellos en la clase de música / educación física, o cualquier cosa que desee enviar para mostrar cómo el aprendizaje va en casa !! El equipo técnico de la Oficina del Distrito ha estado trabajando arduamente para apoyar a los maestros y las familias. ¡Definitivamente los apreciamos! Almuerzo gratis y reducido

Sargeant Families Blog - August 10th-14th


                                        

Hello!

The first day of school is right around the corner and we are so excited to see all of the students online.  Just like when we start school in person, it takes time to transition into the routine of a school day.  Kids will be experiencing many emotions during these next weeks and we want to make sure as the adults in their lives that we support them at this time.  If you need anything from the school staff, please reach out.  

One simple tip that I recommend is printing or writing out your child's schedule where they can see it every day.  In the physical classroom, this is something teachers write on the board every day for kids to see.  It helps provide routine and predictability for kids so they know what is coming next.  I have both my boys' schedules already sitting next to their Chromebooks. :)

As shared before, I know that each of you are experiencing a different start of the year too.  Please stay in communication with your child's teacher so they know when your child will be logging on to complete work.  If you know that your child is not going to be doing any work for the day because they are "absent" for various reasons, please make sure to call the office just like you would during in person instruction.    

Monday is the first day of school.  It's a time to be excited.  A time to see our classmates and teacher.  I encourage you to still make it exciting at home. Take that first day picture you do every year.  Celebrate this milestone.  Although it may be different, it's our reality, and one day it will be a memory.

Contactless purchase procedures:  
1. Please include a check payable to Sargeant Student Body (preferred method) or have exact cash in a sealed envelope. 
2. On outside of envelope write: name of student and how many bracelets are wanted. 
3. Your bracelets will be put into your material bag before being given to you. ALL bracelets will be individually bagged and ready to go.

Free and Reduced Lunch 
There will be free and reduced lunch applications available at the material pick up on Saturday.  Please feel free to grade one at the table when you get the materials.  


PE and music instruction will begin the first day of school.  Mr. Kight (PE) and Mrs. Po (music) will be "live" approximately the first 10-15  minutes of class using Zoom.  They will provide links to other activities that the students will use once their Zoom meeting time is over.  

Instructional Material and Chromebook Pick Up Day - Saturday, August 8th (Materials in multi purpose room and Chromebooks in the office)
The materials your children need for the beginning of the school year will be ready for pick up on Saturday, August 8th.  The times below are an attempt to separate the amount of people coming at one time.  If you have two children, you can pick up at either time.  If your time doesn't work for you, please come at any time for 9:00-1:00.  

We ask that you wear a mask and practice social distancing when getting the materials.  It's also recommended that only one person show up to pick up the items.  

9:00-10:00   TK and Kinder

10:00-10:45   1st Grade

10:45-11:30   2nd Grade 

11:30-12:15   3rd Grade 

12:15-1:00   4th and 5th Grade


At material pick up day, we will also have Chromebooks available to check out for those that didn't get one during the spring.  You will need to have a photo ID and be on the child's emergency list.  You will need to fill out the loaner agreement when you get the Chromebook.  Please review it here and we will have forms on site to fill out and sign.  Chromebooks will be checked out in the office.  




Chromebook Insurance
-Provides Parents/Guardians who would like to purchase insurance independently an option for school issued Chromebooks.
-Premium is $24, and a one-time charge for full coverage. No deductible.

Otus
This will be our new learning management system where students will log on every day to connect live with their teacher as well as get assignments/activities for the day.

Today or this weekend, please have your child log into their Clever account and then go to Otus. Remember that email passwords were reset so please refer to the email that was sent earlier this week.

When you first log on to Otus, you are at the Home page. This page highlights all of the activity for the site and can get a little overwhelming. Try your best to ignore the Home page and focus on the navigation bar on the left. Have your child practice going to the Bookshelf in the navigation bar on the left side. I know this will be new learning at the beginning, but I am confident that even our youngest students will be able to log on and navigate.
