April 2nd-April 5th Community Connection Blog

April 2nd-April 5th

Welcome Back, Bulldogs!  I hope you all had a great Spring Break!  It is hard to believe that we only have 2 months of school left.  Let’s make them great!

Parent Survey Participation:

We had 214 responses to our parent survey.  The grade level with the highest percentage of parent survey participation was 2nd grade!  They earned an extra recess!

A question came up in the survey about student cell phone/personal technology use at school.  Please see below as a reminder:

RCSD Handbook - Personal Technology

We recognize that cell phones and electronics have become common tools for communication. However, they can also significantly distract the learning environment and are vulnerable to theft.

Elementary

Students are allowed to carry cell phones and electronics to school. Cell phones must be silenced and stored in the student's backpacks before entering school grounds. Smart watches must be silenced and not utilized as a communication tool (send or receive messages) during school hours. The school accepts no responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged cell phones or electronics.

Any violation of the cell phone/electronic device policy may result in the phone/watch being held until the end of the day, and staff will communicate with parents/guardians.

Our learner profile attribute for the month of April is COMMUNICATOR.

Students who are communicators are able to think and communicate in more than one language. They can express their ideas by speaking, drawing and writing. They can also communicate using mathematical language and symbols.

How can parents help to develop students who are communicators at home?

  • Encourage your child to stay in touch with relatives and friends who live in other countries by writing letters,

using the phone, sending email or Skyping.

  • When working on math homework, encourage your child to explain his/her answer to you orally or by drawing a picture.

  • Ask your child thought provoking questions and encourage them to discuss them with you. For example:

  • "What would you do if you were scared of someone?"

  • "Is there anything you cannot buy with money?"

  • "Should you get an allowance? Why or why not?"

  •    Work with your child to improve his/her listening skills. Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others.

Attendance

As we enter the final months of the school year, I want to emphasize the critical importance of consistent attendance for your child's success. Every day of learning matters, and regular attendance is key to ensuring they finish the year strong. With just April and May remaining, it's essential to maintain momentum and maximize every opportunity for learning.

Attending school every single day is paramount for students' academic success and overall development. Here's why:

  • Consistency in Learning: Regular attendance ensures students receive consistent instruction and stay on track with their learning objectives. Missing even a day can lead to gaps in understanding, making it challenging for students to catch up later.

  • Building Habits: Regular attendance helps students develop important habits and routines that are crucial for success in school and beyond. It instills discipline, responsibility, and time management skills that are essential for academic and professional achievements.

  • Social Interaction: School is not just about academics; it's also a place for students to interact with peers, develop social skills, and build friendships. Regular attendance ensures students have ample opportunities for collaboration, teamwork, and socialization, which are vital for their personal growth and well-being.

  • Preparation for the Future: By attending school regularly, students learn the importance of commitment, punctuality, and perseverance - all qualities that are valued in higher education and the workforce. Consistent attendance sets a foundation for lifelong learning and success in future endeavors.

Overall, attending school every single day is crucial for students to maximize their potential, build essential skills, and lay the groundwork for a bright future. It is a collective responsibility shared by families, educators, and the community to prioritize and support regular attendance to ensure students' success.

If your child is facing any challenges that may impact their attendance, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're here to support you and your child in any way we can. And don’t forget the resources available on our "Every Day Matters" website!

Let's work together to prioritize attendance and ensure your child finishes the school year on a positive note!

Coming Soon….

April 8th - Eclipse - Students will be provided with glasses for safe viewing at school.

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Our students will obviously be in school during this event, and our educators will take full advantage of this to make it a safe, learning experience for our students.

NASA-approved safety glasses have been ordered for students, and all teachers will work with them to ensure the safe viewing of the eclipse during the event.

Please make sure to tell your child not to look directly at the sun during this event, or attempt to observe the eclipse without adult supervision and guidance. They should closely follow teacher instructions during the eclipse, especially those involving eye and eyewear safety.

If you have questions about the activities that will be conducted at your child’s school or wish to have your student refrain from participating in these activities, please contact the school office and let them know.

We are attaching information provided by NASA to learn more about this event and how to participate safely.
