Sargeant Families Blog - October 13th

Thank you for the donations of the spray for the rock project.  We appreciate it!

IB Update Last month students and staff focused on the IB attributes caring and principled. Students were taught what it means to be a caring and principled and peers recognized each other in class when they noticed examples of each.

This month we are focusing on being an inquirer. An inquirer is someone whose natural curiosity has been nurtured. They have acquired the skills necessary to conduct purposeful, constructive research. They actively enjoy learning, and their love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.

We want our students to focus on these attributes at home and out in the community too. Although we focus on a new one each month, we don't forget about the ones of the past. The IB attributes are what we want everyone striving for each day. Check out all of the attributes on this document (please note the document states risk-takers as an attribute and we are using the new word which is courageous).

Homework
Over the past couple of years the Sargeant Staff has been reading articles about the research around homework.  Based on the research and what is best for students, we came up with some common agreements as a staff.

We decided on the following:
* Students should be reading each night for enjoyment.
* Homework should reinforce skills previously taught - no new skills.
* If a student is struggling, parents can write a note and no consequence.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be including some articles in the blog about the research behind homework. Educators throughout our district (and country) are continuing to read and educate themselves on what really matters when it comes to homework. When students spend the whole day learning and working hard at school, coming home with a lot of homework can make for difficult nights. Over the past year, there have been some questions regarding the lack of homework resulting in parents not knowing what is going on in the classroom. If this is the case, then we need to talk about communication. All teachers should have a means of communicating with you. It may be a newsletter, web site, blog, e-mail, or Class DoJo (just to name a few). If you are looking for ways to specifically support your child, please talk to their teacher.

Like many topics, there is no perfect answer. We are constantly working to improve things in order to do what's best for kids.

Each year Student Council hosts a Bake Sale at the Harvest Festival to raise money for their student account, so they can continue to support Sargeant and the community at large. This year, Student Council representatives voted to use the profits from the Bake Sale to help our own teacher, Ms. Kirkendall, in her battle against cancer. Donations to the Bake Sale are greatly appreciated. Please see attached flyer. There will also be a card making station at the Bake Sale for students wishing to make Ms. Kirkendall Get Well cards.

Upcoming Dates (just a few, remember to check the calendar tab for more dates)

October 18th - Picture Day
October 25th - Eich's Haunted House
