Wellness Tip for the Week -What to do with Big Feelings
Description: Big feelings can be overwhelming much like feeling sick/having a fever. When a person has a fever, we use a measuring instrument-a thermometer to find out the size/strength of the fever (low, medium, high). Try to talk with your student about the size of their feelings like you would talk about their body temperature/fever. As caring adults we respond differently based on the information we gather/what the thermometer says about the strength of the fever. Talking about feelings in sizes such as small, medium, or kids big shows how strong their feelings are and it helps supporting adults gather important information. Much like with a fever, we as the supporting adult guiding the student through matching coping strategies with various feelings.
Use the example below to talk with your child about the type of feeling they might be experiencing by using the colors or the Zones listed below (Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red) with corresponding feeling words and faces. Try the strategies listed with each color zone to support your student with matching a strategy with a zone color. Use this as a starting point for checking in with your child about feelings much like a nurse or doctor take a child’s temperature. Keeping the discussion based on colors, size of feelings (small, medium, big) (1-10) helps us all stay calm together and navigate the big moment and model how it passes like a wave or like turning the volume down when listening to music or the TV.
It is almost time for our next monthly assembly! We loved seeing all the different ways your kids have been learning at home. If you would like to show us how your child is still learning please send any pictures to Ms. DeArcos at rdearcos@rcsdk8.org. The pictures will be in the video at the September assembly. The deadline to submit pictures for the next assembly is Friday, September 25th!
The live link for the event will be posted on the website below at 6:00 on the 16th https://www.samiscircuit.com/familynightcalendar
