What is the ELPAC?
The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is the mandated state test for determining English language proficiency (ELP). It is administered as an initial assessment to newly enrolled students whose primary language is not English, as indicated on a home language survey; and, annually, as a summative assessment to students who have been previously identified as EL students.

Meal Duty Supervisor: We are still in search of a Meal Duty Supervisor from 11:20-12:20 Monday-Friday. If you are interested in this position, please apply on
edjoin.org for the RCSD Meal Duty Supervisor position and note your interest in working at Sargeant. Please, also contact the office to let us know that you have applied.
Please contact the office if you would like to volunteer for yard duty support as we continue our efforts to hire a Meal Duty Supervisor.
Sargeant Reminders for Students:
Please leave toys, devices and games at home. We are finding that these items are coming to school with students and have become a distraction.
Toys, stuffed animals, electronic games and devices, radios, MP3s, trading cards, etc. are disruptive to the learning environment and are not allowed at school or on the bus. (Sargeant Parent and Student Handbook p.23)
The Book Corner
Here are the latest recommendations for 4th and 5th graders made by Mrs. O'connors and Mrs. Vandivier. This week it's all about historical fiction:
If your child loved the "I Survived" Series, they might like:
Code Talkers - a story about a young boy who lies about his age in order to become a Navajo code talker in the war.
Ground Zero - a story about a young 9 year old boy who goes to work with his dad on 9/11...highly recommended by Mrs. O'Connors
Number the Stars - a story about a 10 year old girl living during the Nazi invasion.
Pax and Pax: The Journey Home - a story about a boy and his fox who become separated when the boy's father goes to war...these 2 books are among Mrs. V. 's Top 5 favorite reads.
All choices are in the school library but can also be found in your local library, bookstore, or on Amazon.
Sargeant Support Center
As some of you may be aware, Ms. Hillary will be on maternity leave as of next week with her last day at Sargeant being February 8th. Ms. Hillary has prepared her students for her departure and is in the process of pushing into classrooms to say goodbye for the year. She will not be back for the remainder of this school year, however, our Support Center will still be a space available for students, depending on staff coverage. Furthermore, if you or your family is in need of any assistance, such as referrals to community resources or mental health support, please complete the attached Wellness Referral so the Wellness Team can support you. However, if you or someone you know is experiencing an immediate mental health crisis (such as danger to self or others), please contact other resources for support such as 911, 988 (mental health crisis lifeline), your local hospital, or the Placer County Mobile Crisis Triage number: 916)787-8860.
Good news- Sargeant will be welcoming a graduate level intern into the Sargeant Support Center in April of this year! She will be at Sargeant approximately one day per week this year and will also be continuing to support through the 2023-2024 school year. She will be a member to our Wellness Team and will be providing a variety of supports, such as social skills groups for students, Wellness Club, individual student check-ins, and resource support for students and families. We look forward to her joining our team!

Care Solace helps individuals find mental health care providers and substance use treatment centers. The Care Companion team is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year to quickly connect you to carefully verified providers in your community.
Students, staff, and families may access Care Solace services in two ways:
Call (888) 515-0595 at any time. Support is available in 200+ languages. A dedicated Care Companion will help you every step of the way to research options, secure appointments, and follow up to make sure it is a good fit.
For an anonymous search, answer a few questions to get matched with an extensive list of care providers at www.caresolace.com/rcsdfamilies. Either search on your own OR click “Book Appointment” for assistance by video chat, email, or phone.
Care Solace is now available for use at no cost to you. They will connect you with providers accepting all medical insurances, including Medicaid, Medicare, and sliding scale options for those without insurance. All information entered on the Care Solace tool is confidential and securely stored.
Please note that this service is an optional resource available by choice and is not mandatory. Care Solace is not an emergency response service or mental health services provider.

If there is an immediate need to connect to a trained crisis counselor, please call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org. 988 provides 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors that can help people experiencing mental health-related distress.
Roseville Public Library Conversation Club for Adults Who Are Learning English
The Roseville Public Library offers a Conversation Club for adults who would like to practice conversational English through casual group discussion. The Conversation Club is a free drop-in program that is led by a volunteer and provides a casual setting for adults looking for a language connection. These clubs are held on Mondays from 9:30-10:45 at the Riley Library location and Thursdays from 11:15-12:30 at the DownTown Library location.
Pick Up and Drop Off Reminders: Volunteers are welcome to support a safe Sargeant.
- Please pull all the way forward before stopping to let your child out of the car.
- Please remain in your vehicle and have your student(s) exit from the passenger side of the car
- Please use crosswalks for your safety and the safety of all students and drivers. There is a crosswalk on the MPR side of the parking lot and a walkway on the N. Cirby side. Please refrain from walking through the parking lot as cars are going through the drop off and pick up line.
- Please be patient and kind with other families dropping of students and staff on duty.
- Please contact the Principal, Krista Barker (kbarker@rcsdk8.org) with any safety concerns or with interest in voluteering.
Safety Drills:
Sargeant students and staff participated in a Lockdown drill last week. The drill was successful and feedback is requested from all staff for continuous improvement.
