IB Update

Our learner profile attribute for the month of October is INQUIRER.

Students who are INQUIRERS are curious about the world. They can conduct research independently. They love learning and discovering new things and will carry this love of learning with them throughout life.

How can parents help to develop students who are inquirers at home?
  • Encourage areas of your child's interest by visiting the library to borrow books that explore these topics.
  • Develop an understanding of the internet. Work with your son or daughter when the internet is being used and try to instill the understanding that some internet sites are not reputable.
  • Model being an inquirer. Admit when you don't know the answer to a problem or a question and seek out answers in front of your child.

Calling all Sargeant volunteers!  Did you know that as an IB school, our 5th graders participate in a culminating project in which they choose a social issue and write their own unit of inquiry called the Exhibition Project?  This is a chance for them to demonstrate what they have learned throughout their years here at Sargeant.  These fifth graders will work independently or in a small group with an adult mentor.  Mentors will meet with their group during the school day approximately four times from December-March.  Mentors do not have to have a child in fifth grade to volunteer, but if they do, they will not mentor their own child's group. Exhibition projects will be on display at Open House and again for the student body to visit.  All mentors will be given a set of questions to use to guide the students from start to finish.  Are you interested in helping with this important project?  Please let us know by emailing one of the 5th grade teachers or Jennifer Danielson, our IB Coordinator.

Student Council:
If you are the parent of a 3rd-5th grader who is involved in Student Council this trimester, your child may have brought home a permission slip to help at our upcoming Harvest Festival! We will have a Student Council table selling refreshments as a fundraiser. We have asked Student Council officers and representatives to sign up to work shifts in 30 minute increments at the Harvest Festival. If your child has brought home a permission slip, please complete the permission slip, sign, and return to school with your child. Your student knows to return the permission slip to Mrs. K or Mrs. Palin by Friday, October 6th. Please return the permission slip whether or not your child is able to volunteer. Please contact Mrs. K or Mrs. Palin with any questions!

Crosswalk Safety

Sargeant is very fortunate to have added a crossing guard.  His role is to help keep our students and families safe during drop off and pick up.  Unfortunately, there have been some reports of unsafe driving, double parking, parking in the crosswalk and ignoring Mr. Gary while turning right from N Cirby onto Ridgecrest.  It is important that we all work together for a safe and respectful drop off.
  • Please observe the speed limit and stop signs.
  • Please park in areas that have been designated for parking.  The driveway entrance is not a parking area.
  • Please stop and wait when the crossing guard directs you to do so.  It is for the safety of students crossing and the crossing guard on duty.
If you have questions or concerns about drop off or pick up, please contact Mrs. Barker kbarker@rcsdk8.org

Sargeant Free Little Library

We have a welcoming shady spot next to our MPR that has a free little library of books for kids.  The library could use a little bit of a refresh of book options.  If you have books at home that you would like to donate to the free little library, please bring them to the school office.  If you would like to volunteer to check on the free little library once a week, we would love that too!  Contact Mrs. Barker if you would like to be the Free Little Library Liaison.  kbarker@rcsdk8.org.
